On Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM, Purchase firefighters, alongside members of the Port Chester and West Harrison Fire Departments, seized a rare opportunity to simulate a greater alarm response to one of the largest occupied multiple dwellings in the Purchase Fire District.
Commonly known as "The Big Haus" to the Purchase College community, this residential complex typically houses 400 underclassmen throughout the better part of the year. Due to its high occupancy, complex layout, and lack of sprinkler and standpipe systems, the Purchase Fire Department sought to re-examine and improve upon its current response to fire emergencies.
The life safety factors unique to such occupancies often require special consideration during fires. The Purchase Fire Department has developed a predetermined greater alarm response with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services to facilitate requests for mutual aid from neighboring communities. In accordance with the current second alarm response level, one engine, (E61) one ladder, (L31) and a FASTeam (TL9 and U25) were included to provide the appropriate number of firefighters and types of apparatus to effectively stabilize a major incident at the Big Haus. The drill exercised the incident command system and served as a refresher of basic engine and truck company operations. Most notably, all members gained a better knowledge of the building's layout, construction, hazards, and water sources.
The Purchase Fire Department is grateful to the members of the Port Chester and West Harrison Fire Departments for their continued support and preservation of a strong professional relationship. Special thanks are also given to the Purchase College administration and the New York State University Police for providing a venue for such valuable training.
