On October 2, 2011, members of the Purchase Fire Department attended the 4th Annual Firefighter Appreciation Event at the "AAA 400" NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race held at the Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation received a portion of the proceeds and our members had the opportunity to meet many other firefighters from all over the East Coast.

The race began at 2:00 PM with the singing of our National Anthem and a flyover by four F-18's from Andrews Air Force Base. The crowd of 180,000 roared at the command to "start your engines," given to the 43 cars racing in the event. Dover International Speedway, known as the "Monster Mile," was also roaring as the drivers made each of the 400 laps to complete the race. Kurt Busch crossed the finish line first and everyone made it back to Purchase safe and sound.

A good time was had by all, and more importantly, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation appreciated everyone's attendence. Hopefully, attending this race will become a tradition for our members.
