Car into Building at Purchase College

By Captain Joseph Brefere, Jr.
December 11, 2009

On Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 6:37 PM, the Purchase Fire Department was dispatched to a car into a building at the Starbucks at Purchase College. While Car 2412, Engine 240, and Rescue 30 were responding, 60 Control stated that SUNY PD was on location reporting multiple injuries, including one person pinned beneath the vehicle.

Car 2412 arrived first on scene to confirm the pin and established the SUNY Command. Members observed one male that had been struck then pinned beneath the front end and tire of the vehicle. Hydraulic spreaders, wood cribbing, and EMS equipment were brought into the building to initiate the operation. Crews coordinated between lifting, stabilizing, and patient care to free him within minutes.

Harrison EMS arrived shortly after and crews worked together to package and move the patient to the ambulance. One member was assigned to drive the ambulance so that both EMS personnel could provide care. The patient was transported ALS to Westchester Medical Center. Harrison EMS Chief Joe Bilotto triaged the remaining patients. All units returned in service at 7:11 PM.
