On Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 8:09 AM, the Purchase Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with extrication on the Hutchinson River Parkway southbound in the area of Purchase Street. Car 2411 arrived first on scene, confirming the extrication and establishing the HRP Command. Engine 240 and Rescue 30 arrived shortly after and began extrication efforts. Units observed a Subaru Outback that had rolled off the highway, coming to rest between a road sign column and an outcrop. One patient was found to be trapped in the driver's seat, alert and conscious.
Initial efforts to extricate the patient were delayed due to multiple challenges faced by the firefighters. The position of the vehicle made traditional techniques difficult to execute. Once members were in place to begin operations, they encountered reinforced steel roll cage in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Due to the extensive extrication required, an additional Engine was requested from the Harrison Fire Department. Engine 13 responded immediately and promptly arrived on scene. With the teamwork and coordination of the two departments, the patient was removed from the vehicle and transported to Westchester Medical Center with Advanced Life Support on board. All units were cleared at 9:37 AM.
