On Friday, July 17, 2009, at 1:56 PM, the Purchase Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Interstate 684 northbound just south of the Barnes Lane overpass. Upon arrival, Rescue 30 observed a GMC van that had uprooted approximately 50 feet of guardrail, leaving it pinned beneath. The driver was still in the vehicle, conscious but not alert, with multiple injuries.
The driver side door was spread back to create a better working environment for rescuers. After members assisted Harrison EMS with patient removal and packaging, the driver was transported to the Westchester Medical Center ALS.
Firefighters spent an additional hour assisting the NYSDOT and towing company with guardrail and vehicle removal. The accident caused severe delays during the Friday afternoon rush. The northbound side was closed completely at times, causing traffic to extend as far south as I-287. Rescue 30 cleared the scene at 3:34 PM.
