| On Monday, January 7, 2013 at 4:53 PM, the Purchase Fire Department was dispatched to an outside odor of gas at 12 Windsor Court. The homeowner, alerted by her son of the odor, called the fire department and notified her fuel delivery company. Engine 240 and Tower Ladder 53 crews investigated, detecting an odor of propane in the area of a 1,000 gallon underground tank. Members conducted air monitoring throughout the incident to verify that the gas was not migrating into the house or adjacent low-lying areas.
With the prompt arrival of the fuel delivery company, crews worked together to isolate the leak. After the tank service valve was shut, vapors continued to escape, eliminating the service line as the source of the leak. As a consequence, approximately 200 gallons of propane were transferred to a delivery truck and residual vapors were disposed of by means of flaring. Units stood by to ensure the safe completion of the operation and returned to service at 10:37 PM.
The Purchase Fire Department praises the vigilance and early action of the residents. We encourage all residents and visitors of the Purchase Fire District to report any potentially hazardous condition. |
