| On Friday, June 8, 2012 at 1:59 AM, the Purchase Fire Department was dispatched to an inside smoke investigation at 16 New Street, a two-family home occupied by Commissioner and Ex-Chief Robert Makowski. Ex-Chief Makowski was alerted by the second floor occupants and called the fire department after confirming the odor and subsequent smoke detector activation.
As Engine 240 arrived on scene, the residents of the home were on the front lawn stating that the second floor was filling with smoke. Crews began to investigate and secure a water source. Car 2411 arrived on scene observing light smoke from the attic window and requested that 60 Control put the Town of Mamaroneck FAST and a West Harrison engine on standby in their own quarters.
Once an active fire was found in the attic, Car 2411 had 60 Control fill out the working fire assignment, bringing the standby units to the scene.
Engine 240 laid 200-feet of large diameter hose down the street to the structure. 150-feet of 1 3/4" hose was needed to reach the seat of the fire in the attic. Car 2412 coordinated personnel and assessed fire conditions from the interior. Firefighters checked for extension throughout the home with negative findings.
The Purchase Fire District remained covered with the assistance of Car 2393, Engine 63, and Ladder 31 from the Port Chester Fire Department.
The fire was placed under control at 3:10 AM and the mutual aid departments were released. Purchase units remained on scene to assist the Cause and Origin Team and Building Department. The fire was deemed unintentional, as a nail-punctured Romex cable was discovered at the fire's origin. All units went back in service at 4:37 AM. |
