Sunday night of Labor Day weekend, Purchase Fire Department and several mutual aid agencies were met with advanced fire conditions at a wood frame, townhouse style dormitory. The building is known at SUNY Purchase as “The Commons.” The dispatch came in 9:56PM. E-238 was first due, and dispatchers updated incoming units that SUNY Police was reporting heavy fire. The first alarm assignment was placed on standby immediately after the update, and the working fire was declared as E-238 arrived on scene. Several subsequent alarms were transmitted due to the heavy fire load, wood frame & lightweight construction, and high occupancy. Lines were stretched for extinguishment and searches were negative. The fire was placed under control shortly after 11PM.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Cause and Origin Teams concluded that the fire originated in the kitchen of a first floor apartment. Investigations were underway to determine factors contributing to the start and spread of the flames. See link for photos & videos. The Purchase Fire Department thanks its neighboring agencies for their outstanding assistance.
